I am in the process of writing a book, tentatively titled “Be Well: Your guide to well-being after an abortion,” that Exhale plans to publish in the Spring. Be Well shows women that emotional well-being after an abortion is possible and its easy-to-read, step-by-step format leads them down their own unique path to well-being. As you’ve probably noticed, the vast majority of post-abortion books are either religious-based, anti-abortion books or pro-choice guides for women who feel intense emotional trauma after an abortion. There is no book for everyone else and it’s about time there was one! I am writing this book with the hope that it will serve all women who have had abortions, across the range of experiences and backgrounds, and that reading this book will become standard practice for every woman who has an abortion, sort of like “What to Expect When You are Expecting” is the go-to book for soon to be mommies. I believe that not only will the book be of great service for women it will contribute to our overall work of changing the social climate around abortion so that each woman’s personal experience is more understood and accepted.
In order to make this the most compelling, relatable, best book possible, I need your help!
I need quotes and stories from real women who have had abortions. I am looking for responses to the following questions about POST-ABORTION EXPERIENCES:
- How did your BODY feel before, during, after the abortion? What was unexpected? How quickly did you heal?
- What kind of EMOTIONS did you have surrounding your abortion? And now? Has anything changed?
- How did your spiritual self respond? Was your religious practice affected? What did your SOUL need?
- What was going on in your RELATIONSHIPS? With partners, friends, family? How did they help? Or Hurt? What’s it like now?
- Was your cultural COMMUNITY a hindrance or a source of strength? Do you feel more or less connected?
Respondents don’t need to answer every question. Just respond to the question that brings up the strongest feelings within you, the question you have the most to say about, or even the one you have nothing to say about, because that is interesting too. Answers do not have to be a long, unless you are compelled to write, as two to three sentences per question or topic will suffice.
Email your responses to email@example.com. Please provide your full name and contact information, so we can confirm you are a real person, and include how you would like to be identified if we use your quote in our book. Do you want us to use your full real name? Anonymous? A pseudonym that you pick? Please include the following demographic information about yourself: age at abortion/s, age now, race, religion, and abortion method (pills, surgery, self-induced, etc..).
We are accepting stories until March 1, 2009
